Yorkie Feeding Guidelines

Yorkie Feeding Guidelines

Here are a few things to keep in mind when feeding your yorkie:

  • Try to feed your yorkie in the same place and at the same time everyday. Your yorkie should also eat in a quiet place where it won't be disturbed.
  • Break up any large sized pieces of food or meat to avoid a choking hazard.
  • Try to only give your yorkie room temperature food.
  • Put out plenty of fresh water for your yorkie to drink.
  • Clean out your yorkie's food dish after every meal. Wash it out with hot water to kill off any bacteria that may be there.
  • Don't feed your yorkie any food or leftovers that have been seasoned. Yorkie kidneys can't process herbs and spices.
  • Sweets are not good for yorkies. They can cause tarter and cause your yorkie to be overweight.
  • Milk can give your yorkie diarrhea, so you should avoid giving it to your yorkie.

Yorkie Diet: Homemade Yorkie Food

Yorkie Diet: Homemade Yorkie Food

Before you try to make your yorkie some homemade food, you should learn as much as you can about a yorkies nutritional requirements. Preparing homemade yorkie food is a time consuming process and is difficult, as you don't want your yorkie to suffer from any nutritional deficiencies.

There are 4 essential nutrients you need to make sure are included in your yorkie's meals:

  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Minerals
Protein is contained in meat, fish and cheese. Your yorkie's diet should consist of about 25-30 percent protein. You can use the following meat for protein:

  • lean beef
  • veal
  • venison
  • poultry
  • organ meats
Carbohydrates can be found in oat & wheat flakes, potatoes, rice, corn and noodles. The amount of carbohydrates your yorkie needs is about 45 percent.

Fats are the chief source of energy in yorkies. Most of the fat for your yorkie's diet will come from meat, but you can also add 1 teaspoon of wheat-germ oil to their meals. A yorkie's meal should only contain about 5 percent fat.

Vitamins and minerals can also be added to the meals. You can find commercial supplements in pet stores, or you can add them to the food yourself. Never add any herbs or spices to your yorkie's meal. You can add some fresh, chopped vegetables such as carrots to your yorkie's meals if you'd like.

How to Blow-Dry a Yorkie

How to Blow-Dry a Yorkie

Yorkies shouldn't be left to air-dry, so you will need to blow-dry your yorkie after each bath.

  • Before using the blow-dryer, use a towel to blot your yorkie's coat. Don't rub though, it may cause tangles.
  • Use the lowest setting on the dryer and always hold it about 8 cm. from your yorkie.
  • Use a wire brush to brush as you dry. This will make your yorkie's hair dry faster and look smoother.

How To Bathe A Yorkie

How To Bathe A Yorkie

Yorkies don't have sweat glands like humans, instead they have glands that cover the yorkies coat with a layer of oil. The oil protects yorkies from rain, wind and other elements.

Each time you give your yorkie a bath, you wash away this protective oil. It does gets replenished over time, so you should allow about 2 weeks between baths. If you bathe your yorkie too often, its skin can become dry and chapped.

How to Bathe a Yorkie:

  • Before you give your yorkie a bath, comb out any tangles in your yorkie's coat.
  • Put your yorkie in the bathtub, sink or shower.
  • Put some cotton balls in your yorkie's ears to make sure no water gets in.
  • Wet the yorkie's head from head to rear with lukewarm water.
  • Gently massage the shampoo all over your yorkie, making sure not to get any in the yorkie's eyes.
  • Don't be afraid to give the yorkie's rear a good scrubbing too :)
  • Make sure to clean your yorkie's foot pads and in between the toes.
  • Rinse well. Make sure not to leave any shampoo behind, as this can make your yorkie's skin itchy.
  • Follow up the bath with a good blow-drying.

Yorkie Care: The Teeth

Yorkie Care: The Teeth

You should start getting your yorkie used to dental care as soon as possible. This will make taking care of your yorkie's teeth much easier when it gets older.

Proper nutrition is the best way to prevent tooth problems later on. Hard food is good for keeping tartar off of your yorkie's teeth and you can find several brands of food made with "small bites" that are perfect for a yorkie.

Chew bones and toys are also great for keeping a yorkie's teeth in great condition.

You can also get a toothbrush and dog toothpaste to keep your yorkie's teeth clean. Make sure that the toothbrush is soft bristled and don't use human toothpaste or baking soda on your yorkie.

Here are a few things to consider when you go to choose your yorkie puppy:

Important Yorkie Equipment & Accessories

Important Yorkie Equipment & Accessories

Here is a list of some basic equipment you should have if you're getting a new yorkie puppy:

  • Dog Bed: Your yorkie will need a soft, warm place to sleep. A good choice for your yorkie's bed is a covered bed made of a soft material like foam. Make sure that it will be able to keep your yorkie warm at night. Most yorkie beds have a removable cover that is easy to clean in the washing machine.
  • Leash & Collar: These are absolutely necessary for when your yorkie goes for walks outside. Since yorkies are so small, make sure that the leash is lightweight and that the collar will be small enough so your yorkie can't slip out.
  • Food & Water Dishes: Stainless steel dishes work great for feeding your yorkie. Make sure they have a rubber ring on the bottom or have a rack so your yorkie can't tip them over. Stainless steel dishes are also good because they can be washed in boiling hot water to kill any bacteria that may be in them.
  • Food: Make sure you ask the person you're getting your yorkie from what kind of food they are currently feeding the yorkie. Your yorkie could get sick if you change their food abruptly.
  • Toys: Yorkies love to play! The best toys for yorkies are small balls and rings made of solid rubber or latex. Try to avoid plastic toys that could splinter and hurt your yorkie or even worse, choke them.
  • Combs & Brushes: A yorkie needs to be brushed often to keep its coat looking great.

5 Rules for Yorkie Training

5 Rules For Yorkie Training

Yorkie training is not an easy task, but following these five rules will help you and your yorkie along the way:

  1. One person from your family should do all of the training. Your yorkie could get confused if trained by more than one person.

  2. Make sure all of your family members use the same commands to avoid confusing the yorkie.

  3. Be consistent and maintain authority. Yorkies need to have clear rules know exactly what it is and isn't allowed to do.

  4. Never train your yorkie by hitting it. The best way to see results from your yorkie training is to use rewards for doing a command correctly and are scold the yorkie when a command is done incorrectly. Simply using a different tone of voice is sufficient for scolding.

  5. When you first start your yorkie training, make sure the sessions only last a few minutes at a time. Your yorkie will get bored with long training sessions and it may not learn as quickly.

Yorkie Breed Standard

Yorkie Breed Standard

Breed standards describe in detail the ideal type of a particular breed. It covers both the physical appearance and character traits of the dog. The breed standard is the basis of all breeding programs and is used for judging dogs that participate in dog shows.

Here are some of the most important parts of the breed standard for Yorkies:

  • General Appearance: Yorkies should have its long, straight hair parted on the nose and all the way down the back to the tip of the tail. The yorkie's overall shape should be compact and well-proportioned and the erect posture should command attention.
  • Head: A yorkie's head should be small, flat and to too rounded. The muzzle shouldn't be too long. The yorkie's nose should be black and its eyes should be medium large, dark, bright, and with an alert, intelligent expression. The teeth should meet in a regular sissor bite. A level bite is acceptable. A yorkie's V-shaped ears should stand upright and not be set too far apart. Drop ears and hanging ears are not permitted.
  • Body: A yorkie's body should be compact and short and not too square in shape. It should have a straight back line and powerful flanks.
  • Feet: Yorkie feet should be rounded and have black claws.
  • Tail: Yorkie tails should be docked to a medium length and have plenty of hair. The yorkie should carry his tail slightly higher than the level of the back.
  • Coat: The yorkie's coat is the most important aspect of the breed. The coat should be moderately long and smooth (not wavy) and be fine and silky in texture.
  • Color: From the back of its head to the tip of its tail, a yorkie's coat should be steel blue. Mixtures of pale, brown or black hair are not allowed. On the yorkie's head and crest, the hair should be a rich tan (a yellow gold, not red gold). The hair should be darker at the roots than at the midportion of the hair shaft and should be lighter at the tip. The shaded tan should never reach higher than the elbow or the stifle.
  • Weight: A yorkie's weight should not reach more than 7 pounds. An ideal weight is between 4 and 6 pounds.
These breed standards should only be considered if you are interested in showing your yorkie. As long as the yorkie is happy and healthy, it will be a great pet and friend regardless of the breed standard rules.

Origins of the Yorkie Breed

Origins of the Yorkie Breed

The Yorkshire Terrier breed originated in England. In preindustrial England, serfs of the ruling class were only allowed to keep dogs that were under a certain size, usually small dogs that were unfit for hunting, as all the hunting game was reserved for the aristocracy. The serfs began to breed small, robust dogs that were also good hunters.

Waterside Terriers

In the 18th and 19th centuries, dogs with long smooth coats with a bluish sheen were commonly seen in the countryside. They usually stayed near the rivers and canals, which were major trade routes back then. The people that hauled goods on their boats started taking these dogs with them as companions and the dogs began to make themselves "rat catchers" on the boats. These dogs were called "waterside terriers" and are some of the earliest ancestors of the Yorkie.

Clydesdale and Paisley Terriers

When industrialism started gaining popularity in England, many workers came from Scotland to find jobs. These workers brought their dogs with them, which were called "Scotch Terriers". The official names for these breeds are Clydesdale and Paisley Terriers, both of which are dogs with long, silky, bluish coats and semierect ears. Both of these breeds are now extinct.
