Yorkie Diet: Homemade Yorkie Food


Before you try to make your yorkie some homemade food, you should learn as much as you can about a yorkies nutritional requirements. Preparing homemade yorkie food is a time consuming process and is difficult, as you don't want your yorkie to suffer from any nutritional deficiencies.

There are 4 essential nutrients you need to make sure are included in your yorkie's meals:

  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Minerals
Protein is contained in meat, fish and cheese. Your yorkie's diet should consist of about 25-30 percent protein. You can use the following meat for protein:

  • lean beef
  • veal
  • venison
  • poultry
  • organ meats
Carbohydrates can be found in oat & wheat flakes, potatoes, rice, corn and noodles. The amount of carbohydrates your yorkie needs is about 45 percent.

Fats are the chief source of energy in yorkies. Most of the fat for your yorkie's diet will come from meat, but you can also add 1 teaspoon of wheat-germ oil to their meals. A yorkie's meal should only contain about 5 percent fat.

Vitamins and minerals can also be added to the meals. You can find commercial supplements in pet stores, or you can add them to the food yourself. Never add any herbs or spices to your yorkie's meal. You can add some fresh, chopped vegetables such as carrots to your yorkie's meals if you'd like.
